Book Explores the Spirit and Blueprint of Community Farms
A Thousand New Farms in America
100,000 member families in cities, suburbs, and country
The best way to insure that your family is eating clean, healthy food is to know the people who do the growing, and how they are doing it. Over the last ten years more than 100,000 American Families who live in cities and suburbs have started doing this in partnership with nearly 1,000 local farmers. So can many thousands more of the households across the nation, says Steven McFadden of Parkton, MD, director of The Wisdom Conservancy and co-author of the new book, Farms of Tomorrow Revisited: Community Supported Farms, Farm Supported Communities (1998, 310 pp., Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association, Kimberton, PA)
Back in 1990 McFadden, a journalist for 23 years and the author of five other non-fiction books, teamed up with Trauger Groh, a farmer for 40 years to write, Farms of Tomorrow, the first book about the CSA movement. Now in this new book, they revisit both the farms and the theory. They find a vital movement that is uniting farms and families in communities across the land. The authors see churches, private land trusts, food banks, schools, and other community organizations pioneering CSA, a sparking a wholesome renewal of agriculture.
The new book gives a comprehensive description of the philosophy behind the CSA movement, case examples of many successful CSA farms, essays on Associative Economics and the role of domestic animals such as cows, sample budgets, sample brochures, and a list of resources for farms and community groups seeking to establish CSA's.
"In America," co-author McFadden said, "there is an authentic hunger for something like this. CSA's are helping to rebuild the foundation of our farms and by extension, the foundation of our American society."
The Wisdom Conservancy is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian institute.
