This Ugly Civilization. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1929. Electronic copy (pdf)

Describes life at Dogwoods Homestead, analyzes the detrimental effects of the factory system on its products, workers, and consumers, describes the barriers to living this type of good life and how to overcome them.

Works by and about Mildred J. Loomis

Loomis, Mildred J. Borsodi As I Knew Him: A Collection of 25 Testimonials to Ralph Borsodi, 1886-1977. Spring Gove, PA: School of Living Press, 1986

Loomis, Mildred J. Decentralism ; Where It Came from; Where Is It Going? York, PA: School of Living Press, 1980. Link to Google Books edition.

Loomis documents the ideas and experiments of American decentralists including Arthur Morgan, Henry George, Benjamin Tucker, Paul Goodman, and Ralph Borsodi. All shared a common belief in restoring community self-reliance and bringing economic and social activities back to a human scale. Their experiments played a pivotal role in introducing and supporting organic agriculture, consumer rights, worker-owned cooperatives, community land trusts, alternative education, the ecological use of resources, consensus decision making, and alternative currency and nonexploitive banking.
